Art
Mission Statement
Art is an essential and integral component of a rich, full life. It is the mission of the art program to provide students with a continuous and sequential study of the visual arts. Study in art will enable them to experience and appreciate aesthetic expression and the individuality of others, recognize the social and historical roots of artistic expression and sharpen the artistic and thinking skills that will provide the means for them to express and respond to a wider range of human experience.
The art curriculum is divided into four main areas. These areas are applied to each level with different objectives. The areas of emphasis are: skills and techniques, creative expression and performance, historical and cultural, and response and evaluation.
Skills and techniques: The student develops and understands the art skills for his level.
Creative expression and performance: The student expresses ideas through original art using a variety of art media.
Historical and cultural: The student understands art history and culture as a record of human achievement.
Response and evaluation: The student is able to make judgments about personal art and the art of others.
Basic Assumptions about Art Curriculum Implementation in Small Schools:
1. Art will generally be taught by teachers without a lot of specific training in art or art education.
a. At secondary level, art will generally be taught incidentally as an enrichment activity in some other subject area.
b. At elementary level, specific time will be set aside for art activities. Most teachers will choose to do activities which strongly relate to their own skills and past experiences.
c. At both levels, available prep time will be minimal because teachers have to prep for a number of different kinds of classes.
2. Art does not necessarily need to be taught according to "Scope and Sequence" of concepts and activities, but does need a conceptual framework to be taught well.
